THE THEATRE GYMNASIUM OF EPHESUS

There are some ruins of brick walls and archways to the north of the point where the Arcadian Way (Harbour road of Ephesus ) reaches the Ephesus Great Theatre . These belong to the Gymnasium of the Theatre in Ephesus.

Provided with hot and cold bathing facilities, a hall of ceremonies and a sports room, this is like any other Greek gymnasium. Most likely, it was the headquarters of the Ephesus' youth organization.

The middle part of the palaestra in the south was paved with marble. This yard was surrounded with colunms and galleries on three sides. On the fourth side, facing the north, were there rows of seats, one above the other. The existing three entrances led to the main building which covered an area of 7,500 square metres. Investigations have revealed that the building had collapsed and its interior had been destroyed by a big fire.

On the left-hand side of the road between the Stadium of Ephesus and the Great Theatre there are remains of a secular Byzantine building. A little to the north is the marble which is popularly known as the baptismal front of St. John. It was originally in one of the gymnasiums and was brought here to be used as a fountain trough.
