THE BYZANTINE BATHS OF EPHESUS

Recent excavations carried out by Prof. Miltner of Austria, at a site about 160 yards to the east of the Twin Churches of Ephesus ( Double Churches or Mary’s Church in Ephesus ), have revealed the remains of the fifth century Byzantine Baths, which were popularly called the " Baths of the Drunkard ".

At the centre there was a grand hall with a dome decorated with many paintings. Next to this hall which had numerous niches in its walls, there were secondary halls. To the west and south there was a porticoed lobby.

The dome of the grand hall at centre is important as it shows the difference between the religious and secular styles of architecture. As there have been several periods of construction identified there, these Baths are believed to have been used for a long period of time.
